The 35 best free Windows programs in 2026 you actually need
Windows 11 comes with Edge and Notepad. Everything else you have to install yourself. Here are the 35 programs we actually use — free, no ads, no trial watermarks. All 330+ are downloadable via the moggyday launcher.
Media and entertainment
VLC Media Player handles every format you will ever encounter without a separate codec pack. H.265 4K, AV1, MKV, ISO disc images, network streams — it plays them all. The interface looks dated but the engine is rock solid, and it is updated regularly for security. Nothing beats it for pure reliability.
PotPlayer from Kakao is the alternative that media enthusiasts prefer: it supports DXVA2 and DXVA hardware decoding, which offloads H.264 and H.265 to your GPU instead of the CPU. On older laptops this means 4K playback without fan noise. It also has native HDR tone-mapping when the display does not support HDR natively.
AIMP rounds out the audio side. It is a full-featured music player with equalizer, DSP effects, plugin support and a tag editor baked in. The interface is skinnable and the library handles large collections without slowing down. For podcast listeners there is a separate speed control with pitch correction.
Compression and file management
7-Zip is the gold standard for free archiving. It creates and extracts ZIP, 7z, TAR and GZip natively, and extracts RAR and most other formats without any extra software. The 7z format achieves better compression ratios than ZIP at the cost of slightly longer processing time. Integration with the right-click menu is clean and unobtrusive.
Total Commander has been the dual-pane file manager of choice for power users since the 1990s. The two-panel layout lets you move files between locations by pressing F5 instead of dragging across Explorer windows. Built-in FTP client, file comparison, batch renaming and a plugin ecosystem extend it well beyond what Windows Explorer offers.
WinSCP fills the gap for server access. It is a free SFTP, SCP and FTP client with a proper graphical interface. You can drag files between your PC and a remote Linux server the same way you would in Explorer. It also has a scripting interface for automated transfers.
- 7-Zip: 7z/ZIP/RAR/TAR — free, no ads, open source
- Total Commander: dual-pane, built-in FTP, batch operations
- WinSCP: SFTP/SCP/FTP with GUI and scripting support
PDF and Office
LibreOffice is the most complete free alternative to Microsoft Office. Writer, Calc, Impress and Draw cover the full document workflow. Compatibility with DOCX and XLSX is good enough for daily use; the formatting occasionally shifts on complex templates, but plain documents exchange cleanly. The interface is not as polished as Office but it is fully functional.
PDF-XChange Editor has a free tier that covers basic PDF tasks: annotation, highlighting, text comments, digital signature fields and basic form filling. The paid features are marked with a small icon so you know when you are hitting the limit. For simply reviewing and marking up PDFs it beats Adobe Reader.
7-PDF Printer installs as a virtual printer driver. Any application that can print can now create a PDF by selecting it as the output printer. No watermarks, no page limits, no account required. For occasional PDF creation from Word or the browser it is the simplest possible solution.
Security and system
CrystalDiskInfo reads SMART data from your drives and displays it clearly. You can see the health status, reallocated sector count, read error rate and temperature at a glance. It monitors drives in the background and alerts you before a drive fails. Run it once when you buy a used PC — it will tell you immediately if the drive is dying.
CPU-Z and HWiNFO are the two essential hardware identification tools. CPU-Z gives you the quick overview: CPU model, cores, clock speed, RAM speed and timing. HWiNFO goes deeper: real-time sensor readings for every temperature sensor, voltage rail and fan on the motherboard. If you are overclocking or troubleshooting thermal throttling, HWiNFO is what professionals use.
CCleaner's most useful free feature is the startup manager. It shows every program that runs at login — from all the expected culprits to obscure entries buried in the registry. Disabling Steam, Discord, Spotify, OneDrive and unused manufacturer tools from the startup list is the single highest-impact performance action on most Windows installs. Malwarebytes free edition provides on-demand scanning for malware that Windows Defender misses.
- CrystalDiskInfo: SMART health, temperature, reallocated sectors
- CPU-Z: CPU/RAM identification and timing
- HWiNFO: real-time sensors for overclocking and thermal monitoring
- CCleaner: startup program manager, browser cache cleanup
- Malwarebytes: on-demand scan for PUPs and adware
Developer and utilities
Notepad++ is the free code editor that every Windows developer keeps installed regardless of their main IDE. It supports syntax highlighting for 80+ languages, a powerful macro recorder, column editing mode and a plugin manager that adds capabilities like FTP sync, XML formatting and compare view. The Everything search tool from voidtools indexes your entire file system in seconds and finds any file instantly by name — it is faster than Windows Search by an order of magnitude.
Git for Windows gives you Git on the command line plus Git Bash, a Unix shell environment. It is the prerequisite for every modern development workflow. The installer includes Git Credential Manager so your GitHub or GitLab tokens are stored securely in the Windows Credential Manager instead of plain text files.
The rest of our developer shortlist: Windows Terminal (tabbed terminal with PowerShell, CMD and WSL), Process Hacker (better Task Manager replacement with detailed process tree and network connections) and AutoHotkey (scripting engine for keyboard shortcuts and automation). All free, all available through the moggyday launcher alongside the full catalog of 330+ programs.
